REFLECTIONS || OUR FIRST TRADITIONAL BLOCK PRINTING WORKSHOP

Everyday we feel that we are a step closer to achieving our goals. On February 10, for the very first time in his life, Khushiram – a fifth generation block printing artisan flew from his home town in Sanganer, India to Singapore to share with a curious crowd of textile enthusiasts and art lovers his family’s heritage craft techniques.

We felt excited and happy to host our first traditional block printing workshop together with our partners from Gallery & Co + Foreign Policy Design. Block printing is one of the oldest types of printing technique and has been around for centuries. This technique was invented for storytelling, created as a medium to record history and legacy. And in our mission of commitment to provenance, through this workshop we aimed to share the enduring cultural stories and history that are created same as our pants.

We saw new and familiar faces at the workshop, some friends and family, some new folks who found out about the workshop through Gallery&Co, and of course, our lovely #MATTERtribe folks. Everyone who signed up learned about the traditional processes of creating the block prints and various techniques of resist and direct printing. During the course of the workshop, everyone showcased their creativeness in making their own block printed scarves. It was definitely a fun activity shared with the people who mattered to us. The workshop was a huge success that we’re doing another one soon. Stay tuned for another block printing workshop happening later this year!

Update:

Khushiram sent us this email after his trip.

This was a very awesome Singapore trip, and specially thanks to Ren and Anjali and All Matter Team for this. This was my first time travel out of India, and i was very excited to visiting new country which is totally different form ours. i really enjoyed. this was learning, fun, adventure trip, we tried many different food and visit different places.

The best part of this trip was the workshop, i think around 40 people learn block printing. and they all were happy. This was the first time i did workshop out of India and out of factory, so i know that we arrange our best and we learn a lot form this experience.
