Lamu Island, Kenya, Africa: The Sideswept Dhoti + Chakri Honeycomb

For the third #destinationunknown location, inspirations were drawn from Lamu Island in Kenya, Africa, widely known for its well-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. In this old city, Swahilli designs are primarily geometric, thus the Chakri symbol - a nostalgic interpretation of the freedom of childhood with a nod to the future in our past.

1. Kanga - an important artifact that is part of the Swahili culture representing their arts and crafts. It is also used as a sling to carry babies, melons on their heads and can also be used as a kitchen apron.
2. Straw shoes - residents move about on foot or boat since there are no roads on the island, but only alleyways and footpaths.
3. Shell - Shela is a village located in the southern part of the island, which is also home to the most spectacular beaches on Lamu island.
4. Book - Lamu was on the old Arabian trading routes and hence has a largely Muslim population.
5. Fish - dhow boats are widely used on the island by the local fishermen and as a means of daily transport
6. Old brick - this old city is inscribed on the World Heritage List as “the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa”.

Yes, we’ve heard you. The Sideswept Dhoti is back and about in another print - the Chakri Honeycomb. Versatility and comfort is what we want to pack in our suitcases when travelling, and these pants definitely fit the bill. Inspired by the multifold drapes of the Indian dhoti, this is an edgier version designed for modern asymmetry.
