MATTER CITIES // CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA - The Local culture and how it’s influenced my photography

image

I’m a big believer that what surrounds us seeps into us whether we realize it or not. As a photographer I am constantly inspired by what I see and what I feel when I travel. Even when I travel to places that I’ve visited before, my pictures are different every time because while the core of a culture or the core of who I am may be constant, life is ever evolving and therefore my photography follows suit.

I liked the pockets of moments that I was collecting. I liked that naps in chairs were normal on the street, that neighbors knew each other and congregated outside at night and blasted music, and I loved that all of this was taking place with a colorful backdrop of bold walls, street art, and the scent of street food that carried in the heat of the air.

It’s the long walks through a town that I enjoy the most. Getting lost with my camera in my bag, taking it out only when inspired and enjoying the vibrations of the city when not shooting. In a sense, as inspired as I felt, Cartagena also reminded me about the importance of slowing down, taking those naps, and remembering that daily life is just as photogenic.
