The three scarves EN BLOC, CIRCLE AND LINE (both inspired by Roberto Chabet’s The Ceiling) and IKAN-IKAN, designed by Foreign Policy Design Group and produced by MATTER aim to merge contemporary design with the traditional technique of woodblock and hand-printing by artisans in India.
EN BLOC which means “as a whole; all together at once” draws inspiration from Filipino artist, Roberto Chabet’s The Ceiling, in which collaging cut-out shapes are laid out in a wave-like fashion. The shapes are cut like cornerstone blocks, accented with punched holes and clipped corners depicting the subtle intricacies of woodblock printing.
CIRCLE AND LINE, another print inspired by Roberto Chabet’s The Ceiling depicts mark-making in its simplest form – the circle and line. The print is hand-blocked in grey on 100% natural cotton-silk, mimicking pencil on paper.
IKAN-IKAN is a Malay word that translates to “Fishes”. This design pays homage to the fishing villages of Southeast Asia. Dyed blue, the fishes in this scarf pop their heads playfully as they swim upstream.
The MATTER & Co. scarves will be launched and sold exclusively at Gallery & Co. in the City Hall wing of the National Gallery Singapore from 11 February 2016. Each scarf is priced at $149.
